Sacre Coeur Parish

The church and parish of Sacre Coeur are now solely funded by the parish of the Catholic Church of Saint Monica. This twinning project passed its 25th year anniversary in 2023. Monsignor Louis Faublas is the current pastor of Sacre Coeur parish. His vision for the parish and it’s compound has helped grow and secure the facilities and parish life.

In the midst of political instability and threat to property and life, monsignor leads the church in faith. He conducts a full mass schedule including weekly masses, holy day masses and special celebrations. All of the sacraments are continually administered, and parishioners have even attended retreats. A vibrant men’s club develops new faithful community and parish leaders. The religious education program teaches children of all ages about their faith and prepares them for receipt of the sacraments. The teen youth group is led by Monsignor Faublas as a community outreach, visiting the poor and infirmed and teaching them the virtues of the Corporal Works of Mercy.

The church and compound, with its Whitney Clinic and St. Monica Refectory, are seen by the community as a center for community life, is seen by the community as a center for community life. Monsignor Faublas is seen as a community leader. When problems arise in the community, such as the theft of a cow, he is contacted for help. In an anecdotal way he is seen as the community sheriff.

The Whitney Clinic

The clinic is named after it’s original patrons, Drs. Jim and Elaine Whitney. Their vision and dedication of time treasure and talent has served thousands of desperate people and saved countless lives. They along with dedicated teams of professionals, both dental and medical, visited the clinic several times per year bringing lifesaving treatment to the poorest of the poor.

The town of Hinche is located deep in the central Plateau of Haiti. Since 2017 violence and the threat of kidnapping has made access through the back roads to the clinic unsafe. Our executive board closely partners and monitors the medical clinic and pharmacy with the hope that soon the missions will begin again. At present we employ two Haitian Physicians, a nurse and full clinic staff. Medications are dispensed through the clinic pharmacy. All of these activities are monitored by our US Pharmacist, Physician and Nurse Practitioner. The clinic is now solely funded by St. Monica’s parish and your donations!

Approximately 1,300 patients are seen at the clinic monthly. All are welcome and the facility is well known in the central plateau of Haiti. People are known to walk many miles through the harsh terrain to be treated at the clinic. The clinic sponsors an annual infant vaccination day for the community. Patients come to the clinic before going to the local government run hospital because of our excellent reputation and the care they receive at our clinic. Also our nebulizers and other equipment are more updated than the local hospital. On two occasions the Whitney Clinic has been awarded the, MSPP, Ministry of Public Health and Population, award of excellence by the Haitian Government.

The refectory originally housed a soup kitchen where a daily meal was prepared and distributed to those in need. Almost two hundred meals were served each day. Over time it was discovered that the poorest most infirmed people were either too sick or too culturally embarrassed to participate in going to the compound for the daily meal. People just starved quietly.

In 2019 the program was reorganized. Preparation of meals at the compound was halted, and now the needy in the community are vetted through an independent point person from Caritas. Bundles of provisions are delivered to the handicapped, the elderly and the families in desperate need. The bundles include enough oil, rice and beans to sustain each vetted household for one month. The cost of the bundles will vary month to month based on inflation and market price, however on average a family of 4 can be fed on 150.00 per month. The existing kitchen is used for church functions and special celebrations. The remainder of the building is used for bulk storage of provisions. This reorganization ensures that everyone is cared for including the poorest people who would likely die from malnutrition.

Cedimac

CEDIMAC, is a health education program developed in 2017 for patients of the Whitney clinic. Because the impoverished Haitian diet relies heavily on starches such as rice and sugar cane, diabetes and heart disease are the most prevalent diseases treated at the clinic. In many cases people do not understand the correlation between their diet and the disease. The program educates patients about nutrition and the positive effects exercise can have on the diseases. Until the COVID pandemic ending in approximately 2021 followed by serious ongoing civil unrest, patients were exercising together in groups led by the doctors and clinic manager. Now as the government is beginning to calm the violence we are hopeful the exercise programs can soon restart.

The goal of the program is to empower patients with the tool of knowledge to help them partner with their doctors and manage their disease. In the United States we take this type of nutritional knowledge for granted given the amount of information to which we have access. It is hard to imagine that others just do not understand the problem because they have no access to the information.

No community can exist healthfully without access to clean water. During the COVID pandemic of 2020, the resurgence of Cholera in Haiti also became a threat. Father Faublas directed the construction of community hand washing stations and an entire water treatment system. The system provides safe purified water for washing and drinking that is accessible to the entire community.

Monsignor Faublas has lovingly and jokingly earned the nick name of “Bob the Builder!” His frugal use of the donations you give combined with his constant vision for improvement is producing tangible results. These are just a few of the major projects that we have helped to complete and are planning to complete:

From 2022-2023 the inner courtyard from the church to the clinic was paved. This was needed for sanitary reasons. Mud or dust from the courtyard was continually being tracked into the medical clinic and the church.

In 2023 just prior to the 25th anniversary of Sacre Coeur indoor bathrooms were built adjacent to the church.

During the violence and extreme civil unrest of 2024 a break in occurred at the compound. The church sound system was stolen and the compound was vandalized. Also the guard dogs were murdered. Father has since built a higher security wall and purchased new guard dogs.

Currently the roof on the church must be replaced. That project will be accomplished in sections so the mass schedule will not be interrupted, however when it rains water drips into the church.

Future projects include the building of a parish hall/community center, a laboratory for medical testing, and an agricultural project with banana and moringa groves as well as other vegetables.

Your one time or recurring donations will make these projects possible!
